CARBON OFFSET: Projects & Carbon Offset Credits
Carbon Offset Credits (“COC”) are tradable “rights” or certificates linked to activities that lower the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. By purchasing these certificates, a person or group can fund projects that fight climate change, to support their own carbon emissions. These certificates “offset” the buyers CO2 emissions with an equal amount of verified certified CO2 reductions somewhere else. Some common examples of COC projects include reforestation, building renewable energy, carbon-storing agricultural practices, and waste and landfill management.
Although COC are simple to understand, there are many challenges in producing them. For a certified registry to issue COC, a project must prove it will reduce CO2 emissions from the atmosphere and be accurately measured. This process requires well-documented standards, protocols, and compliance as well as trusted independent third-party inspections to verify that the project is performing.
Titan works with several leading registries and crediting platforms for engineered carbon removal and COC. In conjunction with our partners, we’re developing carbon net-negative projects based on approved standards and methodologies, which COC are issued through certified voluntary market registries.
Approved methodologies specify the carbon removal system boundaries, carbon accounting formulas to establish the net removal amount, environmental safeguards, and documentation that independent verifiers need to issue carbon credits to a project. A rigorous verification process confirms that the products or processes are truly carbon net-negative and that environmental safeguards are being followed. COC are always issued ex-post, after the removal has been produced.
